I asked the winner of the Hair Expo 2011 ‘Colour Technician of the Year’, Matt Clements from Assembly Hair in Queensland to shed some light on the matter. Matt is again nominated for Colour Technician of the year at the upcoming 2012 Schwarzkopf Professional Hair Expo Awards. The winners will be announced at a gala extravaganza on Monday June 11, 2012 that is unquestionably the hairdressing industry’s night of nights. The grand finale of the annual Hair Expo weekend is the culmination of three days of unrivalled education and inspiration at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre starting Saturday June 9 2012.
So Matt, what are the main trends in hair colour for AW2012?
For AW2012 one of the main trends coming through is the merging of warm and cool tones for a contrasting, on-trend look. Sported by celebrities like Kelly Osborne on the red carpet, this look is perfected by opting for soft, golden honey browns accented with lilac, lavender and powder pink tones for a bold statement. Lilac and violet hued hair in general is a tone that we will see a lot of this year. Equally cool crisp almost ’beige’ blondes will also be popping up and lighting up the streets, bars & clubs for 2012.
What hair colouring technique or colour do you think is definitely ‘done’ and people should move on from the last few seasons?
Dip-dyeing & balayage – It’s not so much that people should move away from these techniques entirely, but rather this season we see the technique soften and become more subtle as compared with the half and half tones we’ve seen in seasons past.
What should you look for/questions you should ask when choosing a new colour for your hair?
Firstly consulting a professional is paramount! They will evaluate your skin tone, hair condition, eye colour, existing hue etc. to work out the best colour options for you. Also another important dialogue that you need to have with your stylist (one you’ve found them!), is to evaluate your lifestyle, budget and the at-home-maintenance/follow-up treatments that you are prepared for. As a change of hue for the season or to try something new is great, but only if you’re going to be prepared to do refresher follow-ups and at-home care.
Should you change your hair colouring products/techniques as you age/have lifestyle changes (much like you do skincare)?
Yes – certainly change your products as you age/have lifestyle changes, as this often means a change in your hair condition also, and your locks may requiring a greater emphasis on strengthening, moisturising or volume depending on your hair concern. Also another myth we hairdressers hear everyday is “my hair gets used to the products really fast so I change them regularly”… it’s a myth – as long as you are properly prescribed to the correct regime from the beginning you’ll be fine. Another ‘myth’ is going lighter as you age, If it suits you, it suits you regardless on what age you are.
What products would you recommend to successfully maintain colour between salon visits.
Definitely using dedicated product lines for colour care are vital if you want your hue to last. In particular, I would suggest a weekly treatment to repair damage, as health hair doesn’t fade. Also a corresponding shampoo & conditioner that works with your current hair condition & colour is essential. And for those of you with a bit of extra time and spare change – I’d recommend heading to the salon for a refresher colour and treatment cocktail to renew vibrancy and shine to your hue and to have it last longer.
For colour care try Sebastian Professional’s new Color Ignite range. This shampoo and conditioning duo work to not only keep your hue locked whilst it helps to repair and fortify tresses from future damage. The range also consists of two separate formulations for both multi-tonal and mono-toned hair to provide individualised results. The hair experts at John Frieda have bought out a new range of salon quality colour that you can use at home, Precision Foam Colour, is easy to apply yourself with no mess and comes in array of options for blondes, brunettes and redheads
