2012 fashion week makeup trends

The main trends in makeup and hair for the fifteenth anniversary year of Australian Fashion Week were clear and defined; and as always, followed closely from the trends coming out of the international collections.
‘Futurist’ in both makeup and hair was key, but  looking to Gaia not sci-fi. In makeup this idea evolved throughout the week. The most popular applications had faces contoured in taupes and earth tones on the cheeks with creamy pearl highlights. Copper, terracotta, warm pink and peaches in either matte or glass-like textures enveloped the eye in soft halo’s  - no hard lines. Lips were left nude or tea-stained.
Pastels puffed and fluttered on the eyes and faces  in aqua, coral, candy pink, baby blue and powdered white and were artily exposed  - especially in reference to poolside glamour. Think David Hockney paintings or Slim Aarons works. Glamour came with an edge and a shout out to disco and the pre and post punk era – but never retro. Glitter was the key, again in earthy tones. Red lip were less apparent than at the international collections; never the less deep burgundy and fire engine red did get a rise.
In hair, juxtaposed textures and sculptural forms was popular; unstructured, done but not a ‘do’. High shine and gloss shrouded the shape of the face and cut into the nape of the neck then ebbed and flowed into matte, transparent lengths, with subtle bends and twists rather than curls, either tied up in a pony or loose cascades. Alternately, they ended with blunt, sharp cut ends. These styles created a mood of androgyny; a harder edge came by way of cyberbilly and post-punk psychobilly quiffs.
Now the week may be over  - we’ve certainly seen some of the most wearable and easy to follow looks than in previous years. But don’t get too complacent with your application skills, especially when it comes to the hair do’s – don’t be fooled into thinking you can just leave your hair a little greasy at the roots and un-brushed at the ends – it will not work!
